The Most Important Meal of the Day

We’ve all heard it over and over.. “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. Yeah Yeah. But seriously, it is. All basic somatic operations rely on fuel, aka nutrients. If we don’t replenish our body after (hopefully) a restful night of sleep then it is not properly equipped to take on the day. Our brain will not function to nearly it’s fullest potential, our metabolism will not be kick-started, and our blood glucose levels will spike the second we shove an unhealthy food option in our mouth once we realize it’s 2pm and we haven’t had our breakfast.

Myths: Many believe intermittent fasting is the way to go so skipping breakfast is a no-brainer.

Debunked: While your body will turn to burning fat if there are no more carbs left to burn which can happen with long periods without eating, your blood glucose levels will spike through the roof at the first meal eaten after fasting. Spikes in glucose levels cause crash and burn feelings of energy due to the ups and downs of energy consumed, commonly leading to fatigue, headaches, irritability. Extended periods of unhealthy blood sugar spikes and crashes over time is directly linked to higher chances of heart disease and diabetes.

Myths: I’m just not a breakfast person. I’m just not hungry in the morning.

Debunked: When we wake up in the morning, we are dehydrated. We do not drink water in our (ideally 8 hours) of sleep so when we get up it’s highly important to drink a glass of water. You’ll find that after being hydrated your body will quickly realize that it is ready for some fuel.

Myths: I only need my coffee to get my day started.

Debunked: No, ma’am. You need some water and a balanced breakfast as well. Without breakfast you’re more likely to be cranky and your mood will not be stabilized because your blood glucose levels will be scrambling wondering where there next source of energy is coming from. You will also have a much harder time focusing which is the reason you may think you need coffee, to focus and awaken, but your avocado toast will do a lot more than your latter.
